The High Court has released the full verdict in the high-profile murder case of Abrar Fahad, a second-year student in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet).
Abrar was brutally beaten to death on October 6, 2019, by members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Sher-e-Bangla Hall. The assault was reportedly triggered by a Facebook post he had made criticizing water-sharing agreements between Bangladesh and India. His lifeless body was discovered later on a staircase inside the dormitory.
The following day, Abrar’s father filed a murder case at Chawkbazar Police Station. The incident sparked nationwide protests and public outrage, particularly among students and civil society groups.
On December 8, 2021, a Dhaka court handed down its verdict: 20 Buet students were sentenced to death, while five others received life imprisonment for their roles in the killing.
