Khulna Bureau :

The continuous monsoon rains have caused severe waterlogging in Khulna metropolis. Heavy rains from Tuesday (July 8) morning to noon submerged the city’s main roads and alleys. This has disrupted traffic and caused extreme distress to ordinary city dwellers, especially working people and low-income people.

According to Khulna Meteorological Office sources, 90 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded in Khulna in the last 24 hours, which is the highest this year. The rainfall occurred from 12 noon on Monday to Tuesday at the same time. During this time, knee-deep water accumulated in various areas of the city.

As a result of the waterlogging, serious problems have arisen in the movement of all types of vehicles including buses, rickshaws, and autos on the highway. Severe traffic jams have been created due to vehicles getting stuck in many areas. School and college-going students, office-going people, and citizens going out for urgent needs have suffered extreme hardship.

The areas most affected by the rain include Royal More, Baitipara, Khanjahan Ali Road, Ahsan Ahmed Road, Bastuhara, Tutpara, Chanmari, Luanchara and Mistripara. The ground floors of many houses and shops in these areas have been submerged in water.

Engineer Shahnawaz, a resident of Dolkhola area, said, “Rainwater is now at our doorstep. Although the work on drains and roads has been going on for a long time, it has not been completed yet, as a result, such a situation has been created even with a little rain. Traffic movement has almost stopped.”

Local residents complain that due to the slow pace of development work and lack of proper planning, they have to face the same suffering every year during the monsoon season. The city residents demand that an effective drainage system be quickly built and the ongoing development work be completed within the stipulated time. Otherwise, there is a risk of more severe waterlogging ahead.
