Train services on the Sylhet-Akhaura railway line faced a scare on Tuesday afternoon after extreme heat caused a sudden buckling of the tracks in the Langla railway station area of Rautgaon Union, Kulaura upazila.
The Sylhet-bound Paharika Express, which departed Chattogram around 3:00 PM, narrowly avoided a major accident thanks to the vigilance and prompt action of its driver. As the train approached the Langla area, the driver spotted the warped tracks near the home of local resident Narton Syed and immediately applied the emergency brakes, bringing the train to a halt just in time.
Following the incident, railway workers rushed to the scene and cooled the tracks with water to stabilize the alignment. Once the tracks were deemed safe, the train resumed its journey to Sylhet.
Kulaura Railway Station Master Ruman Ahmed confirmed the incident, stating, “The intense afternoon heat caused the track to bend suddenly. Thanks to the driver’s quick response, a disaster was averted. After cooling the track with water and necessary tools, train movement resumed.”
Later, the Dhaka-bound Parabat Express departed from the area around 5:00 PM, moving cautiously at a reduced speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
Repair and maintenance work on the affected track section is currently ongoing, railway officials said.
