The High Court (HC) has upheld a lower court’s decision to freeze 191 bank accounts linked to Summit Group Chairman Aziz Khan, his family members, associates, and entities.
The accounts, maintained across multiple banks, hold a total of Tk41.74 crore.
The order was passed on Sunday by a bench headed by Justice JBM Hasan, following a hearing on a revision petition filed by Summit Group challenging the earlier directive.
During the hearing, Advocate Mahmudul Arefin Swapan appeared on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), while Barrister Mostafizur Rahman represented Summit Group.
On 9 March, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Ghalib initially directed the freeze after the ACC submitted an application citing corruption allegations.
Summit Group subsequently appealed to the High Court against the order.
According to the ACC, its investigation unearthed evidence
suggesting illegal wealth accumulation by Aziz Khan and his associates through bribery, corruption, and laundering of funds abroad.
The commission also identified substantial sums deposited in savings and fixed deposit accounts, which it deemed “unusual and suspicious.”
The ACC expressed concern that the funds could be withdrawn at any time and transferred overseas, prompting the move to freeze the accounts.
