The High Court has granted bail to Selina Hayat Ivy, the former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, in five separate cases including one concerning the death of garment worker Minarul Islam during the July Uprising last year.
The bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Sagir Hossain passed the order on Sunday, declaring the previous rule on Ivy’s bail to be justified. Barrister Sara Hossain appeared for Ivy during the hearing.
Earlier in May, Ivy’s bail plea was rejected by the High Court while she was in custody in connection with the Minarul murder case.
According to the case statement, Minarul Islam, a garment worker, was shot dead in the Adamjee area on the evening of 20 July 2024 during the anti-discrimination movement.
He was later pronounced dead at the 300-bed Narayanganj Hospital in Khanpur and was buried in his village home the next day.
Subsequently, on 23 September 2024, Minarul’s brother Nazmul Haque filed a murder case with Siddhirganj Police Station, naming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 132 others, including around 300 unidentified individuals, as accused.
Ivy was named as the 12th accused in the case. Several additional cases were later lodged against her.
Law enforcement officials arrested Selina Hayat Ivy on 9 May 2025 at her residence in Paschim Deobhogh and produced her before the court in one of the murder cases, following which she was sent to jail.
Later, on 27 May, the court again ordered her imprisonment after a two-day remand in the same case.
High Court ordered granting her bail in all five cases marks a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings stemming from last year’s political unrest.
