Hasnat, Tahmid held over terror link

Dhaka, Aug 4 (UNB) – North South University former teacher Abul Hasnat Rezaul Karim and University of Toronto student Tahmid Hasib Khan, who remained missing for a month after Gulshan attack, were arrested from the city’s Gulshan and Bashundhara areas respectively for their suspected link to the attack. Tipped off, a team of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police arrested Hasnat around 7:25 pm and Tahmid around 8:45 pm on Wednesday after conducting separate drives, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman told UNB. They were shown arrested under Section 54, he said. Police will produce them before the court seeking a 10-day remand for each, said Masudur Rahman. Abul Hasnat Rezaul Karim, also a businessman, and Tahmid Hasib Khan, also a Canadian permanent resident of Bangladeshi origin, were rescued along with 11 others during the commando operation at the Holey Artisan restaurant on July 2 following a 12-hour hostage standoff. The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police took the duo under their custody for interrogation as suspects soon after incident. Law enforcement agencies claimed that they set them free after interrogation. However, their family members claimed that they remained traceless. Twenty hostages, including 17 foreign nationals, were killed by the militants, while five militants and one suspected associate of the attackers were killed during the commando operation inside the café on 2 July.
