Hasnat Abdullah, the Chief Organiser (Southern Region) of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), was attacked while travelling through Gazipur this evening (4 May).
The incident took place around 7 PM at the Chandna intersection on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime) Taherul Haque Chauhan confirmed.
During the assault, Abdullah’s vehicle was vandalised, and he sustained injuries to his arm.
Following the attack, his vehicle continued towards Dhaka. As it approached the Board Bazar area near the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), students from the university came forward to assist and ensure his safety.
“Hasnat Abdullah got out of the car there and spoke with the students. Gazipur Metropolitan Police officers arrived at the scene shortly afterward,” said Additional Commissioner Taherul.
Police have launched an operation to identify and arrest the attackers, he added.
In response to the incident, Sarjis Alam, NCP’s Chief Organiser (Northern Region), posted on Facebook:
“A group of 10-12 individuals ambushed Hasnat’s car in Gazipur. The windows were shattered, and his hand was bloodied. Anyone nearby, please come forward to protect him.”
