Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Wednesday said that non-repatriation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s to Bangladesh will not harm bilateral relations with India.
He made these remarks in response to a question from journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The foreign affairs adviser said, “Efforts to bring Sheikh Hasina back to the country and maintain mutually beneficial relations with India would continue simultaneously without any issues.”
He further emphasised the need for a safe environment to facilitate the repatriation of Rohingyas, as they would not return otherwise. He also mentioned that tackling diplomatic challenges would be a priority in the New Year.
When asked about possible communication with the Arakan Army, the foreign affairs adviser declined to comment.
At the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Interim Government Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain is set to visit Beijing in the third week of January. Confirming the matter, he said, this will mark his first bilateral visit.
“I am going to China upon their invitation. We will discuss the issues we have with them, but I won’t disclose those now. Foreign secretary has called for an inter-ministerial meeting to identify potential areas of achievement and issues where solutions could be sought from China,” he added.
