Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Ranjit Jaiswal on Monday said India has acknowledged diplomatic note from Bangladesh seeking repatriation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Confirming the matter, Ranadhir Jaiswal said, “We have received a diplomatic letter on Monday from the Bangladesh High Commission concerning the extradition request for [Hasina]. However, at this moment, we have no further comments on the matter.”

Earlier on Monday, Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Interim Government Mohammad Touhid Hossain confirmed that a diplomatic letter had been sent to India. The announcement was made during a press interaction at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

However, he provided no further details regarding the contents of the letter but emphasised that it was part of ongoing diplomatic efforts. This move underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining active communication with neighboring countries, especially in these critical times.

On Monday morning, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said a letter had been sent to the foreign affairs ministry regarding the return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who had fled to India on August 5 following a mass movement.

When asked how Sheikh Hasina would be returned, he said, “We have an agreement with India regarding the exchange of prisoners. The process will be carried out in accordance with that agreement.”

The home affairs advisor made this remark on Monday during an event at the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters in Pilkhana, Dhaka.
