Staff Reporter :

Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, has stated that matters concerning former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are being handled through diplomatic channels and not through the media.

Speaking during a press interaction in Berlin on Tuesday, Jaishankar emphasised that India deals with the current government in Bangladesh and communicates through official diplomatic routes.

“As you know, there is a change in government in Bangladesh. And we obviously deal with the government of the day. How we deal with that is through diplomatic channels, not necessarily through the reports which will be reported in the press,” Jaishankar remarked.

When questioned about media reports suggesting that the interim government in Bangladesh might seek Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, Dr Jaishankar was firm in his response. He shut down the line of questioning, reiterating, “We deal through diplomatic channels.”

Since the fall of Hasina’s government on 5 August, she has been residing in India. The interim Bangladeshi government has indicated that it intends to bring her back through an extradition treaty, as she faces over 100 murder cases since her ousting.
