The National Independent Investigation Commission on the 2009 BDR carnage has issued a public notice calling on 15 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to provide testimony as part of its ongoing inquiry.
In a special notice issued yesterday, the Commission underscored the urgency of the process, aiming to complete the testimonies by 31 March. Due to time constraints, the Commission has requested that the individuals confirm their availability within seven days.
Among those summoned are former army chiefs General Moeen U Ahmed and Aziz Ahmed, as well as retired Major General Tarique Ahmed Siddique, a former security adviser to the prime minister. Fazle Noor Taposh, former Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, has also been called to testify.
Others on the list include Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, former MP for Gopalganj-2; Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former MP for Dhaka-13; Mirza Azam, former MP for Jamalpur-3; and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former MP for Dhaka-8.
Additionally, the Commission has summoned retired Brigadier General Muhammad Shamsul Alam, former commander of the 44th Rifle Battalion; retired Lieutenant General Molla Fazle Akbar, former Director General of Forces Intelligence; and Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, former Director General of RAB.
Former police officers Abdul Kahar Akond, Nur Mohammad, and Monirul Islam have also been asked to provide testimony.
The Commission has requested that these individuals confirm their preferred schedule via telephone, email, or letter. If necessary, arrangements can be made for online testimonies via video conference, according to the notice.
The 2009 BDR carnage, one of the deadliest mutinies in Bangladesh’s history, resulted in the brutal killing of 57 army officers and others. The investigation seeks to uncover further details surrounding the incident and establish accountability for the tragedy.
