A sedition case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 72 others for allegedly forming an online platform called ‘Joy Bangla Brigade’ and conspiring to overthrow the current government through civil unrest.
Additionally, 503 individuals, including Dr. Rabbi Alam, Vice President of the US Awami League, have been identified as special suspects in the case. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been directed by the court to investigate the allegations, confirmed CID Special Superintendent Jasim Uddin.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), on December 19, 2024, an online Zoom meeting was held, where the ‘Joy Bangla Brigade’ was formed.
The participants allegedly planned a civil war to restore Sheikh Hasina to power.
577 individuals from Bangladesh and abroad attended the meeting and pledged allegiance to Sheikh Hasina’s directives.
The discussions reportedly included plans to disrupt the lawful government and resist its administration.
Dr. Rabbi Alam hosted the session, with Sheikh Hasina, co-hosts, and other leaders engaging in strategic planning.
The CID will conduct a detailed investigation to verify the evidence, including voice recordings of the meeting, before proceeding with further legal actions.
The case, filed with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, was approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The court has ordered CID to submit an investigative report.
