Sheikh Arif Bulbon :
A group art exhibition of 17 Batch of Drawing and Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Dhaka was held at Zainul Gallery recently.
Artworks of Razib Bhuiyan, Mehnaz Tabassum, Jinnatun Jannat, Mihan, Fedeya Shahnaz, Nirmol Adhikary, Arifa Evana, Nusrat Jahan, Anuradha Saha and Aparazita Rahman were put on display in the exhibition.
Blind Play (2015) acrylic on canvas by Rajib Hossain Bhuiyan is about contemporary time; play is the game of money making, and it is a blind game, for the players are blind to all rules and regulations, and have no sense of the right and the wrong.- like Jose Saramago’s Blindness.
Dominoes (2015) acrylic on canvas by Mehnaz Tabassum is rhetorical and confronts the art-lover with myriads of definitions and quarries. By extension it is the many fold dilemma and diction of life at large; that life is situational in which difficult choices has to be made between two or more alternatives- so that it is so much like playing a game of dominoes and then it is not also!
Red (2015) oil on canvas by Jinnatun Jannat. Looking at this painting takes the viewer to My name is Red, Orhan Pamuk – which is about miniaturists – painters and craftsmen working for Ottoman Sultan Murad III who was a magnificent patron of their art and about the artistic tradition of red ink from China to Turkey.
Kolpona Bilashini (2015) mixed media by Fedeya Shahnaz, the title of the work means ever indulging in imagination- and this is of tremendous significance- for it is only in imagination that man/woman finds a respite from the hardship of life: It is this faculty of the mind that gives man/woman to endure the agony of living and find the strength, the hope, the desire to live and the ecstasy to love.
Guilded Cage (2015) mixed media by Mihan is the back view of a nude woman, stretching herself against the backdrop of light and shade. We live in a world, where manipulation in every aspect, between relationship, in morals and ethical matter prevail in our day to day life. The title of the painting denotes a luxurious but restrictive environment, and women are most often the victims of such surrounding.
Phool Pori (2015) mixed media by Aparazita Rahman. The title of the painting denoted flower girl, and the name of the artist stands for the unvanquished! The Girl with three red roses and five grey roses is deeply engrossed over the flowers, her innocence stands out in the composition.
Amader Meyebela (2015) mixed media by Nusrat Jahan Lucky has Feminism in its thematic exposition. This theme also touches Aparazita and Mihan’s art works.
Lucky’s work touches the realistic domain where locks and closed door with wire rope barricade symbolises the restricted childhood of the girl children.
Ontahin Prantor (2015) mixed media by Anuradha Saha Tanwi follow the impressionist trend; the abstract title of the work means Endless Limit. It is best represented by a slice of nature which is both limitless and endless in its proclivity. American painter Georgia O’keeffe captured the emotion and power through abstracting the natural world.
In Sight Goddess (2015) oil on canvas by Arifa Evana is half nude woman, eyes down cast, is a departure from the conventional art work of women artists, or the work is a representation of women’s defiance to break down the male monopoly over female figure in art work.
This work is upfront and bold, as if making an announcement that the territory of female figure in art is a unisex domain.
Over all, this exhibition, ‘Ten Dimension’ is essentially an eclectic, multi dimensional display of art works by promising young artists of the country.
