A young man sustained a severe head injury after being struck by a broken blade from a grass-cutting machine at Jahangirnagar University on Saturday afternoon.
The injured was identified as Sumon Mia (26) from Satkhira district who was selling crab fries at a food stall near the university’s central playground during a three-day Night Football Tournament organized by the JU Sports Club.
The incident occurred around 4:30 pm when Abul Hossain, an employee of the Physical Education Office, was cutting grass at the field after finishing his assigned preparation work for the tournament, witnesses said.
Later, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and underwent emergency surgery.
“I was standing beside my stall when the blade suddenly hit him,” said Nadia Mim, a former student of City University who was operating a nearby food stall.
“He immediately collapsed, and at first, no one dared to approach him out of fear. Later, Arshad Habib Vishal helped carry him to the hospital on a motorcycle.” she added.
As of the latest update, Sumon’s surgery has been completed but his condition remains critical.
