BNP on Monday accused the government of blatantly using the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) to harass the opposition leaders and activists alongside the administration.
In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “The government alongside resorting to killing, forced disappearance, oppression, attack and filing cases to suppress opposition leaders and activists has also sometimes nakedly used the administration and at times the ACC to harass them.”
He alleged that the current ‘illegal fascist Awami League regime’ that grabbed power through the ‘farcical, unacceptable and stage-managed January-5 elections’ after being completely alienated from people has made a grand plan to annihilate the opposition men in various ways.
“As part of the plan, the government-puppet Anti Corruption Commission has decided to look into the assets of BNP student affairs secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee,” the BNP spokesman said.
He described the ACC’s such move as an indication of the intensifying government’s serious repression and oppression on the opposition. Fakhrul strongly protested and condemned the ACC’s decision, and urged it to rescind it immediately.
The BNP leader said the government cannot suppress the opposition’s democratic movement by resorting to repressive acts and filing cases against them. “A befitting reply will be given to the government’s arrogant attitude and misdeeds through the victory of the mass people’ s ongoing movement.”
The anti-graft state body on Sunday launched probes into the assets of BNP leader Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee.
The commission at its regular meeting yesterday appointed three inquiry officers to carry out probes into the allegations of illegal wealth accumulations by Anee, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB on Sunday.
ACC deputy director Khandaker Khalilur Rahman is conducting the inquiry into the graft allegation of Anee.
