Govt to import LNG, fertiliser worth Tk 2,000cr

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) yesterday approved a raft of import proposals worth nearly Tk 2,000 crore, including one cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the spot market and several consignments of fertiliser from multiple countries.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division proposed the LNG import, which will be sourced from TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd of the United Kingdom. The single cargo is priced at Tk 485 crore, with a unit rate of $11.54 per MMBtu, officials said following the meeting.
Alongside the LNG deal, the committee cleared several fertiliser imports under the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). These include 40,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP) from MA’ADEN of Saudi Arabia at Tk 390 crore, and 35,000 tonnes of muriate of potash (MOP) from JSC Prodintorg of Russia at Tk 155 crore. In addition, BADC will import 30,000 tonnes of triple superphosphate (TSP) from OCP Nutricrops of Morocco for Tk 215 crore, and another 40,000 tonnes of DAP from Banyan International Trading Ltd of China for Tk 389 crore.
The committee also endorsed the import of 20,000 tonnes of phosphoric acid for DAP Fertiliser Company Ltd under the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC). The consignment will be procured from Sun International FZE of the United Arab Emirates at a cost of Tk 191 crore.
Separately, the CCGP approved the purchase of 30,000 tonnes of granular urea from Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Ltd, priced at Tk 174 crore.
Officials noted that the imports are part of the government’s regular supply arrangements to ensure energy security and adequate fertiliser availability in the domestic market.
