The government is taking a major step toward boosting employment in the country through the establishment of a new Employment Department, according to Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain.
“The government has undertaken the initiative to establish a new employment department to enhance facilities in the labour market,” the adviser said during a recent meeting with International Labour Organization (ILO) Director General Gilbert F. Houngbo in Geneva on Friday.
During the meeting, Dr. Hussain sought technical assistance from the ILO to improve workplace safety and ensure proper implementation of labour laws across Bangladesh.
He outlined various reforms and development initiatives the government has undertaken to improve the labour sector. These include amendments to the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, simplification of trade union registration, and strengthening of labour inspections nationwide.
The adviser also briefed the ILO chief on initiatives for new job creation, entrepreneurship development, improvements in the ship breaking industry, and ensuring a safe and secure working environment in the country’s industrial zones.
Labour and Employment Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman was also present during the meeting.
The adviser expressed the hope that the new Employment Department would play a key role in creating more inclusive and modern job opportunities aligned with international labour standards.
