Shubhachaya Canal Restoration: Govt to enrich Buriganga, Dhaleshwari rivers’ connector
City Desk:
The government is determined to restore and enrich the Shubhachaya Canal by removing encroachments and ensuring environmental purity, as declared by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Water Resources, during a recent project inauguration in Keraniganj.
Speaking at the event, Rizwana Hasan emphasised the crucial role of the Shubhachaya Canal in connecting the Buriganga and Dhaleshwari rivers, underscoring its unique environmental and ecological significance. She stated, “This canal is distinct from others as it not only links two major rivers but also plays a vital part in maintaining the area’s water flow and supporting agriculture and fisheries”, says a press release.
The adviser stressed that restoring the canal’s depth is a priority and highlighted the need to prevent further illegal encroachment. “The banks of the canal will be secured with concrete to bar any unlawful settlements, and new walkways are planned to ensure unrestricted public access while preventing occupancy. The army will begin the dredging work immediately, and local residents are urged to fully cooperate with the authorities for the project’s success,” she explained.
Rizwana Hasan assured the public of complete transparency, sharing that the project’s budget details are being made available to citizens. She reminded the audience, “As taxpayers and local residents, you have a right to know how public funds are being allocated and spent.”
Addressing environmental issues, the adviser called for strict measures to halt the dumping of industrial and household waste into the canal, urging the empowerment of local authorities for effective waste management and pollution control.
Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.), Adviser for Home Affairs and Agriculture, also addressed the gathering. He emphasized the historical role of the canal as a source of water and a key environmental asset. He remarked that through re-excavation, water flow will be enhanced, leading to improved sediment control, and that the cleansing process will benefit both agriculture and local fisheries.
