Govt remits sentences of 56 lifetime prisoners
Staff Reporter :
The government has ordered the release of 56 prisoners who were serving life sentences, granting them clemency after more than two decades of incarceration. The decision comes as part of a sentence remission process under the existing prison regulations.
The matter was confirmed on Tuesday by Md. Jannat-ul-Ferdous, Assistant Inspector General (Media and Development) of the Department of Prisons.
According to the prison official, these individuals have already completed 20 years of their life sentences, including remission benefits.
Following this, the government exercised its authority under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and Prison Regulation 569, and pardoned the remaining portions of their sentences, allowing their release.
“This decision reflects the government’s compassion and commitment to upholding justice while allowing for rehabilitation,” Jannat-ul-Ferdous stated.
However, the names and identities of the 56 pardoned prisoners were not disclosed by the prison authorities.
The move is seen as part of a broader effort to decongest prisons and provide deserving inmates a second chance at reintegration into society.
