The Interim Government has directed law enforcement agencies to take strict action against recent processions organised by leaders and activists of the Awami League whose activities are banned.
Speaking at a briefing at the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Sunday said the directive followed a high-level meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna, attended by 10 advisers, including the Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.
The meeting discussed the recent surge in marches or processions by Awami League members across Dhaka and other parts of the country. Authorities have already arrested several participants, with operations ongoing.
“These banned groups are attempting to create instability and fear among citizens through organised flash marches, disrupting law and order,” Shafiqul Alam said.
He emphasised that such activities now constitute a national security issue, not just a law-and-order concern.
The press secretary also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding the 13th national parliamentary elections in the first half of February.
“No power on earth can stop this election. Preparations are under way to ensure it as scheduled,” he said.
Officials noted that the recent marches coincide with the ongoing judicial process related to July’s killings, prompting desperate and reckless attempts by defeated political forces to undermine public order and the democratic process.
Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to intensify monitoring of illegal assemblies and take strict legal action against those organising them.
Regarding recent incidents, including attacks at Nurul Paglar in Rajbari, seven individuals have been arrested, two of whom are linked to local banned Awami League politics.
Authorities confirmed that further action will be taken based on ongoing investigations.
The briefing also highlighted directives for maintaining heightened security during the upcoming Durga Puja festival and ensuring coordination with religious leaders to preserve communal harmony.
Officials stressed increased communication and cooperation among security agencies to prevent disruptions to public safety and the election process.
Present at the briefing were Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Deputy Press Secretaries Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar and Apurbo Jahangir.
