A government officer’s wife, Nishi Rahman, got a bail from the court, accused in a case over the killing of eight puppies that were stuffed into a sack and drowned in a pond in Pabna’s Ishwardi Upazila.
Confirming the development on Sunday, prosecutor Moshfeka Jahan Kanika said: “The court granted bail because the case was bailable and considering that the suspect is a woman.
After the investigation is completed and the chargesheet is filed, legal action will be taken in court if necessary. The next appearance date for the suspect has been set for Jan 11.”
Nishi is the wife of Hasanur Rahman Nayan, an officer of the Ishwardi Upazila Rural Development and Cooperatives Department.
Citing case documents, lawyer Kanika said that eight puppies were secretly stuffed up in a sack and thrown into a pond near the Upazila council building. The bodies of the puppies were recovered from the pond on Nov 30.
Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun filed a case accusing Nishi Rahman over the incident. She was then arrested.
Engineer Harun Or Rashid, local representative of the People for Animal Welfare Foundation, said: “This action should be taken as a warning against cruelty and violence. The complaint is not against any individual, but the main goal is to prevent violence against animals.”
