Govt mulls student employment in public offices

Staff Reporter :

The government is exploring the possibility of expanding part-time employment opportunities for students across various public sector offices, following the success of a pilot initiative involving student assistants in traffic management roles.

Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, revealed the development during an event held at the Dhaka North City Corporation headquarters on Saturday.

“Since 5 August last year, we have engaged nearly 1,000 students as part-time assistants with the traffic police, drawing inspiration from similar practices in several developed countries,” he stated. He further noted that the government now intends to replicate this model in other departments where permanent staffing may not be necessary.

“Many roles in public offices can be effectively managed on a part-time basis. Employing students in these positions would not only help reduce administrative costs but also support students in gaining financial independence,” Bhuiyan added.

Discussions are currently underway to determine the most effective approach for implementing and formalising the programme across different branches of the public sector.
