The government has announced a significant increase in the daily wages of temporary labourers engaged in urgent work across various public sector institutions. Starting July 1, day labourers will see their wages rise by up to Tk 225, according to a circular issued by the Regulation Wing of the Ministry of Finance on Thursday.
The wage revision comes under the newly approved “Daily-Based Temporary Workers Employment Policy, 2025”, and will apply to temporary workers hired on a daily basis in ministries, divisions, directorates, offices, state-owned enterprises, and autonomous bodies.
According to the circular, in Dhaka and Chattogram City Corporation areas, workers will now earn Tk 800 per day, up from the current range of Tk 575 to Tk 600.
In divisional towns and other city corporation areas, the new wage is set at Tk 750, compared to the previous rate of Tk 550 to Tk 600.
In district and upazila areas, workers will receive Tk 700 per day, up from Tk 500 to Tk 550, depending on skill level and employment status.
The revised rates cover both skilled and unskilled, regular and irregular temporary workers. The move is aimed at ensuring fair compensation and improving living standards for thousands of labourers working on government projects.
The circular also outlines several conditions, employment and payment must comply strictly with the 2025 policy, including provisions for a safe and appropriate working environment.
The number of workers hired must be approved by the competent authority.
All payments must be made within the allocated budget of the respective ministry, division, or organization.
Monthly workers are not eligible for the new daily wage rate.
Any irregularities in wage disbursement will make the responsible authority accountable, with all existing financial rules to be enforced rigorously.
