Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed stated yesterday that the current government’s focus is on short-term reforms rather than mid- or long-term changes in various critical sectors.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of PKSF Day 2024 at the PKSF Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, he explained, “We’re implementing short-term reforms. Our aim is to leave a footprint that you can follow, knowing it is for the welfare of the people. Ultimately, it is the people who will encourage you to stay on this path.”

Celebrating its 35th anniversary with the theme “Finance for Inclusive Growth,” the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) was praised by Dr Ahmed as a “world-class organisation” for its contributions to capacity-building within its own institution and among partner organisations. He urged PKSF’s leadership to uphold this high standard.

Dr Ahmed emphasised that while mid- and long-term reforms are crucial, they should ideally be managed by a political government rather than an interim or caretaker government. “Undertaking such initiatives is not suitable for a transition government,” he added.

Dr Ahmed also highlighted the ongoing support from international partners, noting that “multilateral and bilateral agencies, as well as foreign countries, have shown their support.”

However, he underscored the need for capable individuals and transparent institutions within the country to ensure that even well-planned projects can be successfully implemented.

The event’s special guest, PKSF’s founding managing director Badiur Rahman, joined PKSF chairman Zakir Ahmed Khan, who presided over the event, while acting managing director Fazlul Kader delivered the welcome address.

Since its establishment on 13 November 1989, PKSF has provided funds to over 200 partner organisations across Bangladesh. As of June 2024, these organisations have a membership base of 20 million, with 92 per cent of members and borrowers being women.
