Special Correspondent :
The government has fired three Assistant Attorney Generals (AAGs) from their posts in connection with scuffle centering the counting of votes in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election.

The sacked AAGs are Zakir Hossain Masud, Kazi Bashir Ahmed and Shama Akter.
“The appointment of lawyers Zakir Hossain, Kazi Bashir Ahmed and Shama Akhter have been revoked and they are relieved of the charges as assistant attorneys general,” said a notification issued on Monday by the solicitor wing of the law ministry.

Their appointment was cancelled through a notification signed by solicitor Runa Nahid Akhter as per the order of the President.

The order will be effective immediately, said the notification. However, law ministry sources said the three were removed following Friday’s violence centring the Supreme Court Bar Association election.

Of the three AAGs, Zakir and Bashir were among the 20 people, most of the lawyers, accused in an attempt to murder case filed by assistant attorney general Saiful Islam Siddique Saif with Shahbagh Police Station, over the clashes.

Independent candidate Nahid Sultana Juthi, pro-BNP lawyer and secretary candidate Ruhul Quddus Kazal and 18 others were among accused in the case.

Saif is the supporter of Awami League-supported secretary Shah Monjurul Haque, the secretary-elect, while the three sacked AAGs are the supporters of Nahid Sultana Juthi, the rebel AL secretary candidate and the wife of Awami Jubo League chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash.

Meanwhile, police arrested six lawyers, including Kazal and Kazi Bashir Ahmed, from different parts of the capital in connection with the case; and the court placed Kazal on a four-day remand and the rest five on a three-day remand for nterrogation.
