Staff Reporter :
Mirza Abbas, Standing Committee Member of the main opposition party BNP, has accused the government of attempting to sidetrack the students’ anti-quota movement by associating it with BNP.

Speaking to journalists at the grave of BNP founder late President Ziaur Rahman, Abbas urged the government to promptly address the students’ demands regarding quota reform.

“It is unnecessary to mask the real issue of quota reform by falsely implicating BNP in this movement.

This is a deceitful tactic by the government to divert the course of the movement,” remarked Mirza Abbas, expressing concerns over the government’s intentions.

“As the people have lost faith in this government, we fear they may be plotting actions detrimental to the country under the guise of student protests,” he added.

Accompanied by leaders of BNP’s newly formed committees for Dhaka South and North city units, Abbas paid respects at Ziaur Rahman’s grave, laying a wreath and offering prayers for his soul.

Responding to questions, Mirza Abbas underscored BNP’s primary challenge as toppling the Awami League government.

“The continued rule of this government threatens the independence and sovereignty of our nation. We must save the country from this oppressive regime,” Abbas asserted.

Regarding BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s health, Abbas expressed grave concern, stating, “When our leader is unwell, the entire nation suffers. Today, we visit Zia’s grave with hope for our nation’s recovery.”

Reaffirming BNP’s commitment to democratic values, Abbas declared, “No movement led by BNP has ever failed in the past. Our leaders and activists have sacrificed their lives, endured injuries, and faced imprisonment.”

On July 7, BNP announced the formation of partial convening committees for Dhaka North, South, Chattogram, and Barisal Metropolitan city units, marking a strategic reorganization of the party and its affiliates.
