Govt determined to ensure fair polls in 2026: EC

Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarker has said the government is fully prepared and committed to holding a free, fair, and credible national election in February 2026.

He made the remarks at a daylong workshop at the CODEC Training Centre in Kuakata, organised by the Patuakhali District Senior Election Office.

The event was chaired by Barishal Regional Election Officer Md Faridul Islam and attended by about 60 officials from eight upazilas.

As chief guest, Anwarul Islam noted that amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) now empower returning officers to postpone polling if required. He also urged polling officials to carry out their duties confidently and without fear.

Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed, Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner Dr Mohammad Shahid Hossain Chowdhury, Additional SP Apu Saroar, and EC Deputy Secretary Mohammad Mustafa Hassan were present as special guests.
