Gopalganj police are likely to seek a court order on Sunday to exhume three bodies for autopsy, said Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
“One of the victims, a Hindu man, was cremated by his family, so no autopsy can be conducted in that case,” Alam told UNB on Friday. He added that the families had forcibly removed the bodies from Gopalganj General Hospital before post-mortem examinations could be carried out, disrupting legal procedures.
The interim government has formed a formal investigation committee to look into the July 16 violence in Gopalganj. The committee has been given two weeks to submit its findings to the Chief Adviser’s Office.
“We are committed to ensuring accountability and uncovering exactly what happened,” said Alam.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the clashes rose to five after 32-year-old rickshaw-puller Ramjan Munshi died early Friday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He had sustained bullet wounds during the violence involving law enforcers, ruling party supporters, and members of the banned Chhatra League.
His body is currently at the hospital morgue awaiting autopsy, confirmed Inspector Md Faruk of the DMCH police outpost.
