Gold medalist young scientist Tarif dies in road mishap

Sheikh Russel gold medalist young scientist Taher Mahmood Tarif (21) lost his life in a road accident.

Tarif died on the way to Dhaka on Tuesday (May 7) in the evening. Earlier, he was seriously injured in a road accident at Kalikapur on Ishwardi-Pabna highway around 1 pm. Tarif is the son of late Abdus Samad of Mashuriapara Bakul Mor area of Ishwardi town.

Locals said that Tarif was going to Pabna in a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw. On the way, the autorickshaw hit a truck standing on the road at Kalikapur.

Tarif was seriously injured. He was rescued from there and taken to Pabna General Hospital. Doctors sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after first treatment. He died in Tangail in the afternoon on the way to take Dhaka.

Tarif’s uncle Alamgir Hossain said that Tarif was science-minded since childhood. While studying in class 10, he invented the oxygen concentrator and put it on the shelves. Then Tarif discovered more. I could not imagine that the very talented Tarif would leave prematurely.

Shahidul Islam Shaheen, Principal (Acting) of Govt Sara Marwari School and College said, Tarif discovered oxygen concentrator while studying in class 10 and brightened the face of Ishwardi along with our school. He has several inventions. They are awaiting the approval of the Ministry of ICT.

As a small innovator, Tarif received the Sheikh Russell Gold Medal from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2022. From 2020 to 2023, he was awarded as the best junior scientist at the district level in four national science and technology fairs.

When the news of Tarif’s untimely death spread, a shadow of grief descended on all quarters. On Wednesday (May 8) at 11:30 a.m., a large number of people from different classes and professions participated in his funeral prayer at Iswardi Government College ground.

It should be noted that Tarif’s discovery of oxygen concentrator and Sheikh Russell’s achievement of the gold medal were published in the daily New Nation.
