A case has been filed against Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman GM Quader, JP Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu, former Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun-or-Rashid, and seven others on charges of nomination trade, extortion, and robbery.
The case was filed on Saturday with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka by Nazmin Sultana Tuli, a former central committee member of the Jatiya Party and a human rights activist. The court recorded the plaintiff’s statement and kept the complaint pending for further orders.
The other accused in the case are: JP Additional Secretary General Rezaul Islam, central committee member Newaz Ali Bhuiyan, GM Quader’s wife Sharifa Quader, former Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Uttara Detective Branch Akram, former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Uttara DB Nazmul, Sub-Inspector Pabitra Sarker of the Airport Zonal Team, and Dhaka North Metropolitan Jatiya Party member Md. Saidul Islam.
According to the complaint, “Under the direct patronage of GM Quader, the other accused were involved in nomination trade during the 2024 dummy election. They lured the plaintiff with a promise of nomination and demanded Tk 5 million via message.
When the plaintiff raised objections at a central committee meeting, tensions flared within the party, exacerbating internal conflicts. Later, in an act of retaliation, with the help of some corrupt former police officials and 40-50 unidentified individuals, they broke into the plaintiff’s house at around 8:30 PM on October 10, 2023.
They looted furniture, seven bhori (approximately 81 grams) of gold jewelry, Tk 365,000 in cash, important documents, mobile phones, laptops, and other valuables. When the plaintiff prepared to hold a press conference on the matter, she received death threats.”
Plaintiff Nazmin Sultana Tuli said, “I was an aspiring JP candidate from Narsingdi-4. GM Quader demanded Tk 5 million from me. When I refused, he harassed me with a case and humiliated me within the party.
He was aided by DB Harun and others from the administration. Even after the fall of the Awami government, they are still trying to regain power through various means. I have suffered from trauma for a long time and have been socially defamed. I demand exemplary punishment for those who have tainted politics.”
