Sylhet Bureau :

The old gas wells in Sylhet seem to be getting a new lease of life. As part of the workover of abandoned and inactive wells across the country, new gas has been found in well number 1 of the Kailashtila gas field.

If everything goes well, the gas here will start being added to the national grid within a few days. There is a possibility of adding at least 5 million cubic feet of gas every day.

Sylhet Gas Field Limited (SGFL) Deputy General Manager (Operations) Eng. Mohammad Farrukh Ahmed confirmed this information on Thursday (November 20) afternoon.

He said that it will be possible to supply about five million cubic feet (Mcf) of gas to the national grid from the well.

Gas supply will start after completing all the necessary processes within the next two to three days.

There are a total of 9 wells in the Kailashtila gas field. Of these, the first gas was found in well number 1 in 1961.

Gas was extracted from here with a long break until 2019. Later, when production decreased, the well became inactive.

A major workover program has been started from 2023 to reactivate the old wells of the country. As part of this, workover is underway in 14 wells under the jurisdiction of Sylhet Gasfields Limited.

So far, work has been completed in 7 wells, including Kailashtila-1, and new gas reserves have been found in each.

Regarding the progress of the work on Kailashtila-1 well, Project Director Shafiqul Islam said that the discovery of new gas in the well has already been confirmed.

Sylhet Gasfields Limited will make a formal announcement once the remaining formalities are completed.

According to the company’s estimates, new gas supply to the national grid can start within two to three days.

This workover work has identified a gas layer at a depth of about 22,000 feet, which is quite significant according to experts.

Earlier, on September 15, 8 million cubic feet of gas was supplied daily from well number 3 of Rashidpur Gasfield.

Now, a total of 110 million cubic feet of gas is going to the national grid from the wells in the Sylhet region every day.

Not only that, new gas has been discovered in one well after another in the Sylhet region in the last one year. Well number 7 of Haripur is extracting 7-8 million cubic feet of gas every day.

21 million cubic feet of gas reserves have been found in well number 8 of Kailash Tila. New gas levels have also been found in well number 2 of Rashidpur and well number 10 of Haripur.

SGFL believes that if the ongoing projects are completed as planned, 250 million cubic feet of gas can be added to the national grid from the Sylhet region alone every day.

The new well exploration and workover project is already being taken forward at a cost of about 600 crore taka.

Since the discovery of the country’s first gas field in Haripur, Sylhet in 1955, the region has been considered the main center of the country’s gas reserves.

Currently, SGFL has five gas fields under its control-Haripur, Rashidpur, Chhatak, Kailashtila and Beanibazar. Out of these, only Chhatak gas field is abandoned.
