Bapex, the state-owned oil and gas exploration company, has discovered new gas reserves in at least four wells at the Kailashtila gas field. “Kailashtila, under the Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL), has made these discoveries in the last seven months,” according to a recent release of Bapex.
Gas has been found at a depth of 3,438-3,447 meters in the well, the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources announced on Friday. The well holds a gas reserve of 25,040 billion cubic feet, which has a market value of Tk1,620 crore.
“Bapex started digging the Kailashtila Well-8 in January last year. Currently, 21 million cubic feet of gas are being experimentally extracted daily,” said SGFL Managing Director Mizanur Rahman. He added that full-fledged gas extraction from the well is expected to begin within three months.
According to SGFL sources, authorities began to dig Well-8 in 2023 under a new initiative at a cost of Tk150 crore. At present, nearly 100 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas are being added to the national grid from the existing wells. The new wells are expected to increase production from 100 mmcf to 250 mmcf, the sources said.
Earlier, on 27 January, new gas reserves were found in Well-2 of the Rashidpur Gas Field, also controlled by SGFL. This well has 157 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas. Additionally, on 26 November, 50 bcf of gas reserves were found in Well-10 of the Haripur Gas Field, the oldest gas field in the country.
