Francis Ford Coppola has probably never had such a bad time in his 60-year career.
This Hollywood director has earned the status of a legend in world cinema with the movies ‘The Godfather’, ‘The Conversation’, ‘Apocalypse Now’. He had wanted to make a movie titled ‘Megalopolis’ for many years.
The movie, made with his own money, was released in September 2024. But something that has never happened in his career for so many years, is happening.
It was a complete failure at the box office! Francis Ford Coppola spent $120 million to make ‘Megalopolis’.
But the box office returned only $14.4 million. After spending so much money on a movie and losing his investment, Coppola is on the verge of a financial ruin.
He is now facing a dark time after losing everything. He is selling whatever he has left to cover this huge loss.
Coppola auctioned off his expensive watches at the end of October. His personal collection included many luxury watches, one of which was worth over $1 million.
The New York Times reported that Coppola has decided to sell seven watches from his collection. The watches will be auctioned off at Phillips Auction House in New York on December 6 and 7.
The most expensive watch among them was kept by him for about eight years. He designed the watch himself. In addition to all these hobby watches, Coppola had to sell an island he bought.
On November 8, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Coppola had bought an island in Belize, Central America. The island, called Coral Cay, is 8 miles long. The director would occasionally go there for vacations. Coppola sold his favorite island for $1.8 million.
Francis Ford Coppola first achieved success with the movie ‘The Godfather’. Later, in addition to making movies, he was involved in various businesses including resorts and lifestyle brands. Through this, he became wealthy.
However, he lost all his savings while building ‘Megalopolis’. In an interview, he said, “I don’t have any money now because; I invested all my money in building Megalopolis. I also took some loans. It’s all gone. It will take 15-20 years to recover this loss. But that time is not in my hands.”
The science fiction film ‘Megalopolis’ is set in the backdrop of the Roman Empire.
It stars Adam Driver, Jon Voight, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Dustin Hoffman, and others. Although it received praise from some critics upon its release, most criticised Coppola.
