NN Online:
Police have filed four murder cases in connection with the deaths resulting from violent clashes surrounding the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) rally in Gopalganj.
Each case names between 1,400 to 1,500 unidentified individuals—allegedly activists and leaders of the ruling Awami League and its affiliated organisations—as suspects.
Gopalganj Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge Mir Mohammad Sajedur Rahman confirmed on Sunday that the cases were filed late Saturday night.
A fifth murder case is expected to be filed soon, following the death of autorickshaw driver Ramzan Munshi, who died of gunshot injuries while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on July 17.
Tensions in Gopalganj had been mounting since Tuesday over the NCP’s “July March.” Violent attacks on Wednesday plunged the town into nearly five hours of unrest, as Awami League activists allegedly clashed with NCP supporters, police, and army personnel.
Four people were killed and over 50 others injured in the chaos—at least nine of them with bullet wounds. The deceased were identified as:
Dipta Saha (30), son of Santosh Saha, Udayan Road, Gopalganj
Ramzan Kazi (17), son of Kamrul Kazi, Harinahati village, Kotalipara
Sohel Rana (35), Shanapara, Gopalganj
Imon Talukder, Bherar Bazar, Gopalganj Sadar
Later, Ramzan Munshi, one of the injured, died on Thursday night at DMCH.
None of the five deceased underwent inquest or post-mortem examinations prior to their burial or cremation. While the Home Affairs Adviser indicated that exhumation could be considered “if necessary,” it remains unclear how this would apply in the case of Dipta Saha, who was cremated.
Two others with gunshot injuries—Suman Biswas and Abbas Ali, both aged 30—are still receiving treatment at DMCH.
Details of the Cases:
Case over Ramzan Kazi’s death: Filed by Sub-Inspector Ayub Hossain. The FIR states that the NCP rally ended peacefully at the municipal park. As the motorcade moved toward Madaripur, around 1,400–1,500 individuals—identified as Awami League members and affiliates—launched an armed attack near SK Salehia Madrasa. When police and army personnel tried to intervene, the assailants reportedly opened fire. Ramzan Kazi was shot during the exchange and later died at the hospital.
Case over Dipta Saha’s death: Filed by SI Shamim Hossain. According to the FIR, at around 2:30 pm near the College Mosque, AL supporters allegedly fired on law enforcement and army personnel. Dipta was critically wounded in front of Milan Pharmacy and declared dead at the hospital.
Case over Sohel Rana’s death: Filed by SI Abul Kalam Azad. The FIR alleges that Sohel was shot near the launch terminal by Awami League members and later died from his injuries.
Case over Imon Talukder’s death: Filed by SI Sheikh Mizanur Rahman. Imon was allegedly shot by AL-linked attackers near the old Sonali Bank building close to the launch terminal.
All four cases follow a similar narrative, citing mass involvement, coordinated armed attacks, and fatal outcomes. Investigations are currently underway.
