Former minister Kamrul remanded for five days in connection with murder case

A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for former Food Minister Advocate Kamrul Islam in connection with the killing of jute trader Md Monir during the July mass uprising in Chankharpul, Dhaka. The remand was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadikur Rahman after a hearing on Wednesday, 24 September.

During the proceedings, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam Khan Pulok of Shahbagh Police Station, had requested a 10-day remand for Kamrul Islam, who was present in court. The prosecution was represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon. Kamrul Islam’s attorney, Aftab Ahmed, sought bail and asked for the remand to be cancelled. After considering both sides, the court approved a five-day remand.

Kamrul Islam was apprehended on the night of 18 November last year in Sector-12, Uttara, by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He has remained in custody since then, with multiple remand orders issued.

According to the case details, during the July mass uprising last year, on 5 August, jute trader Md Monir joined protests in Chandkharpul under Shahbagh police station. He was shot and killed on the spot by bullets fired by the accused. Monir’s wife, Rozina Akter, filed the murder case with the police station on 14 March. The case lists 351 known accused and 500 unidentified suspects, with Kamrul Islam named as the seventh known accused.
