Former officer-in-charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station, Md Rafiqul Islam, has been placed on a four-day remand in a case filed for blocking BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s house in 2013.

This occurred when five sand-laden trucks were parked outside her residence to prevent her from attending a political event.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Afnan Somi issued the order after police presented Rafiqul, now an additional superintendent of police with DMP’s Gulshan zone, before the court. Police had requested a five-day remand.

On October 4, Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal leader Md Shariful Islam, on behalf of the BNP, filed the case with Gulshan Police Station. With permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs, police arrested Md Rafiqul Islam on Thursday.

According to the case documents, during the Awami League government’s efforts to retain power, a conspiracy was formed to hold the 2014 elections under its own administration.

In response, the BNP announced a ‘March for Democracy’ on December 29, 2013.

To prevent Begum Khaleda Zia from joining the march, the police parked five sand-laden trucks outside her Gulshan residence.
