City Desk :
Parts of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Comilla’s Chauddagram have been submerged under knee-deep water, disrupting traffic, as floodwater in the district and surrounding areas has risen due to rain and an onrush of water from upstream from India.
This led to a traffic jam stretching 8-10 kilometres on Thursday morning, causing significant problems for drivers and passengers, reports media.
The submerged portion of the highway extends several kilometres from Nabagram to Chauddagram Bazar.
Many vehicles broke down due to water entering their engines, and some drivers were attepting to use the wrong lane, which could worsen the traffic situation.
Local traders mentioned that while there was some water on the road on Wednesday night, it increased suddenly the next morning, causing the road to become impassable and leading to traffic congestion.
The police and fire service had so far been unable to alleviate the situation, they said.
Mia Bazar highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Lokman Hossain said the police were working on the ground to address the situation, but the high water levels were making it difficult..
