Flood death toll rises to 27

The death toll from the recent devastating floods has risen to 27, with four additional fatalities reported in Cumilla on Tuesday.

However, the number of flood-affected individuals has decreased.

According to officials from the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, the breakdown of the deaths is as follows: 10 in Cumilla, one in Feni, five in Chattogram, one in Khagrachhari, five in Noakhali, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Lakshmipur, and three in Cox’s Bazar.

Additionally, two people are still missing in Moulvibazar district.

Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, Adviser of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, provided the update during a press conference on Tuesday.

He stated, “The number of flood-affected districts remains at 11. These districts are Feni, Cumilla, Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Lakshmipur, and Cox’s Bazar.”

As the flood situation has improved, the number of affected people has decreased to 5,619,375, down from 5,701,204 reported on Monday.

The number of flood-marooned families has also reduced to 1,207,429, compared to 1,238,048 the previous day.

Faruk E Azam further noted that no new areas have been flooded following the opening of the 109 gates of Farakka Barrage.

He also mentioned that the ministry has received information that no new areas have been affected.

The latest update from the ministry reveals that a total of 509,728 people have sought refuge in 3,886 shelter centres, and 34,421 cattle have been sheltered as well.

The floods have impacted 541 unions and municipalities across 74 upazilas in the 11 affected districts.

In response to the crisis, a total of 620 medical teams are providing treatment in the flood-affected areas.

Relief efforts include the allocation of Taka 3.52 crore in cash, 20,650 metric tons of rice, 15,000 packets of dry food, Taka 35 lakh for baby food, and Taka 35 lakh for fodder to the 11 flood-hit districts.

Relief distribution is ongoing, supported by both government and private initiatives.
