Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad inaugurated an assistance program for flood-affected families in Sylhet on Monday. The inauguration ceremony and an exchange of views meeting were held at the premises of SOS Children’s Village Sylhet in Dayamir Union, Osmani Nagar Upazila, on Monday afternoon.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Commissioner Murad emphasised the importance of collective efforts in building a humane society. He highlighted that community participation is essential for improving the socio-economic conditions of disadvantaged people.
He also praised SOS Children’s Village Sylhet for its relentless efforts in ensuring a better future for underprivileged and orphaned children. He urged all sections of society to contribute to maintaining and expanding such initiatives.
The event was presided over by Md Mazharul Islam Khan, assistant director and in-charge of SOS Children’s Village Sylhet. Osmani Nagar Upazila Executive Officer Joynal Abedin attended as a special guest. Other notable attendees included Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shahnaz Parveen, Dayamir Union Parishad Chairman STM Fakhr Uddin, and SOS Social Center Sylhet Assistant Director Tanbir Ahmed. The guests toured the SOS Children’s Village Sylhet and spent time with the children.
SOS Children’s Villages Bangladesh has launched the Humanitarian Assistance to the Flood Victims in Sylhet, Bangladesh project to support those affected by the devastating 2024 floods. Under this initiative, Tk 12.54 crore will be distributed among 3,000 families in Osmani Nagar and Balaganj upazilas.
In the first phase, which began on January 29, a total of 565 flood-affected families received financial assistance directly through bank accounts. The distribution included, Tk 6,000 each for 38 individuals for livelihood support, Tk 5,000 each for 19 individuals for house construction assistance, Tk 4,500 each for 508 individuals for food security assistance.
The initiative aims to provide crucial support to families struggling to rebuild their lives after the catastrophic floods. Authorities and community leaders have urged continued efforts to aid the affected populations and strengthen long-term resilience against natural disasters.
