Staff Correspondent :
Police have recovered five sacks filled with National Identity (NID)
cards from Gazipur, along with a large number of polling officer ID
cards and election seals, abandoned beside the Dhaka–Narayanganj Link
Road in Fatullah. The recovery was made late Sunday night (September
21) near the Fatullah Stadium area.
Eyewitnesses said that in the evening, a white car pulled up in front of
the stadium and several individuals quickly dumped the sacks before
leaving. At first, locals thought they were bags of garbage and paid no
attention. But after noticing the sacks were clean, they became
suspicious. When opened, the sacks were found to contain a huge
number of NID cards and election materials.
Nazmul Hasan Babu, a local volunteer leader of Fatullah Thana, said:
“I was working at a nearby sawmill and have been campaigning for a
long time to stop people from dumping garbage here. Suddenly, I saw a
white car drop off several sacks. My men checked and found NID cards
and polling officer ID cards inside. We informed the police, who quickly
arrived and seized the materials.”
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Narayanganj, Tarek Al
Mehdi, said:
“Five sacks of NID cards have been recovered. An investigation is
underway. Further details will be shared later.”
Rakibuzzaman, Additional Election Commissioner of Narayanganj, said:
“All the recovered cards are from Gazipur Sadar area. They are not from
our district. Initially, it seems the cards are old and discarded, and they
are not smart cards. How they ended up in Narayanganj is being
investigated.”
Currently, all the seized NID cards and election materials are being kept
at the Narayanganj District Election Commission office.
