Five held over gang rape in Kushtia

A woman was allegedly gang-raped in front of her husband in Moslempur village of Bheramara Upazila, Kushtia.

The traumatic incident took place on Saturday at around 11pm in a lychee orchard located beside the Kushtia-Ishwardi Highway. Police have arrested five people in this connection.

Bheramara Police Station Police Inspector (OC Investigation) Rakibul Islam confirmed the matter to the media saying that police launched an immediate operation and arrested five suspected individuals.

The arrested have been identified as Kalu Pramanik, 46, Murshid Sheikh, 45, Titu alias Tipu Mondal, 42, Ejajul, 42, and Rubel Ali, 24, a van driver.
The victim, a 26-year-old hotel worker from Paschimpara village in Juniadah Union, was returning home with her husband on a van from her workplace.

At the time, both were stopped by a group of miscreants in the Moslempur area. The attackers allegedly beat and tied up the husband before gang-raping his wife.

Following the incident, locals informed the police. According to police sources, three of the arrested suspects have confessed to their involvement during initial questioning.

However, the police’s handling of the situation has drawn criticism.
The victim and her husband were reportedly taken to the Bheramara police station immediately after the incident and were allegedly held there overnight.

When contacted, Kushtia Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman said, “The incident is under investigation. The victim will be sent to the hospital for treatment after the case process is completed.”
