NN Online:

A fire broke out early Wednesday morning at a chemical warehouse in Mamun Plaza, located in Old Dhaka’s Hatkhola area. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after nearly two hours of effort.

Anwarul Islam, Warehouse Inspector at the Fire Service, said the fire was reported around 5am. “Seven units were deployed—four actively worked to control the fire while three remained on standby,” he added. The fire was brought under control around 7am.

Saleh Uddin, Deputy Director of the Fire Service and officer in charge of the operation, said the exact nature of the chemicals stored on the third floor of the three-storey building was unknown, as no representative from the warehouse owner was present.

“This lack of information made the operation riskier and delayed our initial response,” he noted. “We had to use both foam and water to tackle the flames.”

Residential families living on the other floors of the building were safely evacuated. No casualties were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
