A fire erupted at Sundarban Square Market in city’s Gulistan on Saturday morning, has been brought under control at 11:12 am, about an hour later.

Earlier, the fire broke out on the fifth floor of the market around 10:00am. Eleven units of the fire service were deployed at the scene to bring the fire under control, said Talha Bin Jashim, acting officer (media cell) at Fire Service and Civil Defence.

According to the sources, there are various shops on the fifth floor of Sundarban Square Market. The fire spread across these shops, and thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the building.

However, the cause of the fire could not be known immediately, the official said.
According to the Fire Service, lack of a fire safety system and absence of firefighting equipment increased the building’s fire vulnerability.

Fire Service’s Assistant Director Kazi Nazmuzzaman said that they have been issuing notices for years. “This building was repeatedly identified as risky.”
