UNB, Kurigram :

Nearly one month after the opening, ferry services on Chilmari-Roumari route remained suspended since Saturday afternoon following the collapse of the ramp of a pontoon.

A huge number of goods-laden vehicles, cars, microbuses and motorbikes were waiting to cross the river, causing immense suffering to the commuters.

The soil under the ramp of a pontoon collapsed in the ghat area on Saturday afternoon, forcing the authorities concerned to suspend the ferry services on the route, said Banijjyo Prafullo, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport and Corporation (BIWTC) at Chilmari ghat.

Already, the authorities concerned are working to repair it and the ferry services can be resumed from Monday, he said.

Ferry services on the Chilmari-Roumari route over the Brahmaputra River started on September 20 with two ferries—‘Kunjalata’ and ‘Begum Sufia Kamal’.
