Bean fields can be seen across the field in Muladuli of Ishwardi. The pinkish white flowers among the green vines of beans will catch anyone’s eye. This time Agam started weaving dreams of ‘Roopban’ and ‘Auto’ beans. But the farmer’s dream has turned into a nightmare due to continuous rain from September 13 to September 16. Hundreds of hectares of bean fields are now under water.
According to Ishwardi Upazila Agriculture Office sources, there is a possibility of bean cultivation in 1,600 hectares of land in the upazila. Out of this, about 1,150 hectares of land has been cultivated with early varieties of beans. The market for early varieties of beans has started to pick up. Farmers started preparing for winter beans along with other coppice, carrot, radish vegetables. But winter vegetable growers in Ishwardi have faced heavy losses due to continuous rains.
Nazmul Haque Ranjan, assistant observer of Ishwardi Meteorological Office, said that in the last few years, the maximum rainfall of 541.1 mm has occurred in Ishwardi in August. In September 41, 67.5, 65 and 49.6 mm on 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th respectively i.e. a total of 223.1 mm rained in four days. A total of 346.4 mm of rain has been recorded till September 16, he said.
Monirul, a bean grower of Sheikhpara village, said that the roots of three bigha of bean plants are now under water. There is no drainage system. About 1 lakh 20 thousand taka were spent to cultivate three bigha land. The beans are just beginning to grow on the trees. I sold it as one piece at a good price. In this situation, if Shimte is destroyed, I will be destitute.
Muladuli Sub-Agricultural Officer Romana Parveen said that there is no system to drain water from the agricultural land of Goalbathan village in this union. The bean fields here are still under water. Not only Goalbathan, but every nearby village has been flooded. There is no water drainage system as the Kamala river flowing through the union is full. Waterlogging occurs here only when it rains. As a result, crops of hundreds of hectares of land are being destroyed due to waterlogging.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Mita Sarkar said, Muladuli Union is famous for bean cultivation. About 850 hectares of land are cultivated in this union every year. This time there has been extensive planting of early varieties of beans.
