To mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change in onion producing areas of Bangladesh, the Onion Conservation Adaptation Project at the Farmer Level is being implemented on a partnership basis and funded by the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust.

A day-long farmer training on modern onion production and storage methods was held on Wednesday. 90 farmers from 12 upazilas of the district participated in the training at the meeting room of the Bogura Banani BADC Irrigation Building. Bogura Agricultural Extension Director Sohel Md. Shamsuddin Firoz presided over the event, while Abdul Wadud, Additional Director of Agricultural Extension Bogura Region, delivered the keynote address.

Project Director Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman delivered the welcome address and said, This project is being implemented in 107 upazilas of 16 districts of the country, besides, farmers will receive 27 thousand taka through bank accounts from the project. Total onion production in the country is 4 million metric tons, demand is 3.5 million metric tons, 25-30 percent of onions are wasted Due to this, 4-7 lakh metric tons of onions have to be imported every year. In the future, we want to bring this import to zero quota. He also said that the current Agriculture Secretary Emdad Ullah Mian has been importing onions.
