BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday expressed grave concern over what he termed a “new dark shadow” threatening Bangladesh’s democratic future. He warned of a concerted effort to derail the upcoming national election and deny citizens their right to vote.

“After the blood and sacrifices of countless students and ordinary people, a new hope for real democracy and a modern, fascism-free Bangladesh had begun to emerge. But now, that hope is under threat once again,” Fakhrul said during a virtual address from Thailand, where he is recovering from recent eye surgery. His remarks were delivered at a joint meeting of the BNP and its affiliated organizations.

Fakhrul alleged that a calculated conspiracy is in motion to postpone the election and restrict people’s voting and civil rights. He claimed certain elements embedded within the government are actively working to mislead the nation and steer it away from its democratic path.

“You can already see the return of divisive politics,” he said, adding that there are attempts to sow discord among different segments of society and pit state institutions against one another.

In light of these developments, Fakhrul urged all BNP leaders and activists to remain vigilant, act with awareness, and stand firm against any conspiracies.

He emphasized that the BNP now carries the vital responsibility of restoring democracy, rebuilding the country, and fulfilling the people’s aspirations.

“I urge all BNP leaders and activists to stay mindful of these duties. We must ensure that no force can undermine Bangladesh’s independence or sovereignty, and that democracy is not crushed again by autocracy or fascism,” he said.

The meeting took place at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, with participation from senior leaders across the party’s associated wings.
