BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called for unity among party activists to ensure that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is no longer allowed to engage in politics in Bangladesh.

“We must take a vow that we will never allow fascist Sheikh Hasina to do politics in Bangladesh again. We will not bow to anyone. We will build a self-reliant nation with our own strength,” Fakhrul said while addressing a rally at Shahbagh, Dhaka, organized by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) to mark one year since the July uprising.

Speaking to JCD members, he said, “A new sun has risen. It signals a new horizon and inspires new dreams. This is our opportunity to rebuild Bangladesh.”

Fakhrul praised the sacrifices made by Chhatra Dal activists, noting, “Our student brothers have shed their blood, endured arrests and torture. I believe there are hardly any JCD members who haven’t faced jail or persecution. Today is a day of mixed emotions—we remember the comrades we lost a year ago.”

He also alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had taken refuge in India and was making threats from abroad. “She and her allies are not only issuing threats but also trying to instigate unrest in our country,” he claimed.

Ending his speech on a hopeful note, the BNP leader expressed optimism about the upcoming national election expected in February. He said he hopes BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman will return to Bangladesh, contest the polls, and lead the party to victory.
