BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the judgment handed down against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina signifies ‘the end of every form of authoritarian rule’ in the country.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Fakhrul wrote, “This verdict is not merely a ruling on Sheikh Hasina’s actions-it represents the eradication of all strands of dictatorship from this land.”
Earlier in the day, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) found Sheikh Hasina and two others guilty in a case concerning crimes against humanity committed during the July-August uprising last year, which left more than 1,000 people dead.
The tribunal sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal to death, while former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun-who testified as a state witness-received a five-year prison term.
Additionally, the court ordered that the assets of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Kamal be seized by the state.”
