BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday voiced hope that the return of party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia would contribute to the restoration and strengthening of democracy in Bangladesh.

“In the current state of the country, Khaleda Zia’s presence and return is highly significant to the people. We believe her leadership will make the path to democracy smoother,” Fakhrul told reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

He also expressed optimism that Khaleda’s return would help advance the nation toward a more inclusive and discrimination-free environment.

Khaleda Zia arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday morning following nearly four months of advanced medical treatment in London. She was accompanied by her daughters-in-law, including Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

A Qatari royal air ambulance, arranged by Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, carried Khaleda and her entourage and landed at the airport at 10:42am.

Fakhrul, along with several senior BNP leaders, was present at the airport from 8:40am to receive the former prime minister. He noted that Khaleda had endured prolonged oppression under what he described as a “fascist regime” before being permitted to travel abroad for medical care.
